Propulsion

Propulsion refers to the mechanism that generates thrust to move an aircraft forward. In aviation, propulsion systems are typically powered by jet engines, turboprops, or piston engines. Jet engines are commonly used in commercial aviation and military aircraft, and work by taking in air, compressing it, mixing it with fuel, and igniting it to create a high-velocity exhaust stream that propels the aircraft forward. Turboprops are used in smaller aircraft and work by using a turbine to drive a propeller. Piston engines are used in smaller general aviation aircraft and work by using a reciprocating motion to turn a propeller. The efficiency and power of a propulsion system can greatly affect an aircraft's performance and range.
