Terrain Avoidance Systems
Terrain Avoidance Systems (TAS) are electronic devices installed in aircraft to provide pilots with information about the terrain and obstacles in their vicinity. The system uses radar, GPS, and other sensors to detect the proximity of terrain and obstacles and provides visual and audio warnings to the pilot if the aircraft is in danger of colliding with the terrain. TAS is designed to help pilots avoid Controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents, which occur when an airworthy aircraft is flown unintentionally into the ground, water, or an obstacle. TAS is a critical safety feature in modern aircraft and is required by law in many countries.
