Coriolis Effect

In the context of aviation, the Coriolis Effect refers to the apparent deflection of the path of an object that moves within a rotating coordinate system. The object does not actually deviate from its path, but it appears to do so because of the motion of the coordinate system. This effect is named after Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis, a French scientist who described it in 1835. In aviation, the Coriolis Effect is particularly relevant for long-distance flights, especially those that cross the equator. The rotation of the Earth causes the Coriolis Effect, which can affect the flight path of an aircraft. Pilots must take the Coriolis Effect into account when planning their routes to ensure accurate navigation. The Coriolis Effect also impacts the weather systems, which in turn, affect aviation. For example, the rotation of low-pressure systems is due to the Coriolis Effect. Understanding this can help pilots anticipate and avoid adverse weather conditions.
