Magnetic Compasses
Magnetic compasses are instruments used in aviation to indicate the direction of the aircraft relative to the Earth's magnetic field. The compass consists of a magnetized needle that aligns itself with the Earth's magnetic field and is mounted on a pivot so that it can rotate freely. The compass is mounted in a housing that contains a lubber line, which is used to align the compass with the aircraft's longitudinal axis. Magnetic compasses are subject to errors caused by the aircraft's metal structure and the Earth's magnetic field, and these errors must be compensated for by the use of correction cards or electronic devices.
