Sonar

In the context of aviation, Sonar, an acronym for Sound Navigation and Ranging, is a system that uses sound propagation to navigate, communicate with, or detect objects on or under the surface of the water, such as other aircraft or submarines. While sonar is more commonly associated with marine applications, it also has significant uses in aviation, particularly in aircraft designed for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. These aircraft are equipped with sonar devices that can be lowered into the water to detect and track underwater targets. The sonar system works by emitting a sound wave that travels through the water, bounces off an object, and returns an 'echo' to the sonar device. By calculating the time it takes for the echo to return, the system can determine the distance to the object. Sonar systems in aviation are crucial for tasks such as search and rescue operations, underwater recovery, and anti-submarine warfare.
