Area Navigation
Area Navigation (RNAV) is a method of navigation that permits aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these. RNAV systems are used to enhance the efficiency of flight operations by providing shorter flight paths, more direct routing, and increased access to airports and airspace. RNAV systems can be based on performance requirements for the aircraft, such as Required Navigation Performance (RNP), or on the use of waypoints defined by latitude and longitude coordinates. RNAV systems can be used in all phases of flight, from departure to approach and landing.
