Subatomic Particles

In aviation, subatomic particles refer to the high-energy particles that are present in cosmic rays and can pose a threat to aircraft and their occupants. These particles can cause electronic equipment malfunctions, such as single-event upsets in avionics, and can also increase the risk of cancer for frequent flyers and aircrew. Subatomic particles include protons, neutrons, and electrons, as well as other particles such as muons and pions. The primary source of subatomic particles in aviation is cosmic radiation, which is more intense at higher altitudes and latitudes. To mitigate the risks associated with subatomic particles, aviation authorities have established guidelines for radiation exposure and require airlines to monitor and report radiation levels on their flights.
