Atmosphere
In aviation, atmosphere refers to the layer of gases surrounding the Earth, extending up to approximately 100 km from the surface. The atmosphere is divided into several layers, each with its own characteristics and effects on aviation. The troposphere, closest to the Earth's surface, is where weather occurs and where most aviation takes place. The stratosphere, above the troposphere, contains the ozone layer which protects the Earth from harmful UV radiation. The mesosphere and thermosphere are higher still, and have different properties such as decreasing air pressure and increasing temperatures. Understanding the properties of the atmosphere is crucial for safe and efficient aviation operations.
