Automatic Dependent Surveillance

Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) is a surveillance technology in aviation where the location of an aircraft is determined by the aircraft itself, as opposed to by ground-based radar. The aircraft's onboard navigation systems determine its position and then broadcast this information via a data link to air traffic control and other aircraft in the vicinity. ADS is 'automatic' because it requires no pilot or external input. It is 'dependent' because it relies on the aircraft's navigation system to provide surveillance information. There are two types of ADS: ADS-Broadcast (ADS-B), where the aircraft broadcasts its position and other data to any equipped aircraft or ground station within range, and ADS-Contract (ADS-C), where the aircraft sends its position and other data to a specific ground station under a 'contract' agreement. ADS improves safety by providing more accurate and timely information about an aircraft's position, particularly in areas where radar coverage is poor or non-existent.
