Baikonur Cosmodrome
The Baikonur Cosmodrome is the world's largest operational space launch facility located in southern Kazakhstan. It was originally built by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s as the base of operations for its ambitious space program. The facility covers an area of 6,717 square kilometers and includes a range of launch pads, tracking and telemetry stations, and a transportation network. It has been the launch site for a variety of missions, including the first manned spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin in 1961. Today, it is leased and operated by the Russian government and serves as the primary launch site for the International Space Station (ISS) missions. The Baikonur Cosmodrome is a significant site in aviation and space exploration history, symbolizing the beginning of the space age and the ongoing exploration of space.
