Cognitive function refers to the mental processes that allow us to perform tasks such as learning, memory, attention, perception, problem-solving, decision-making, and language comprehension. In aviation, cognitive function is critical for pilots and air traffic controllers to perform their duties safely and effectively. Pilots must be able to process information quickly and accurately, make decisions under pressure, and maintain situational awareness. Air traffic controllers must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, communicate clearly and effectively, and make decisions based on complex information. Factors such as fatigue, stress, and distractions can impair cognitive function and increase the risk of errors or accidents.
