Color Vision Deficiencies

Color Vision Deficiencies (CVD) refer to the inability or decreased ability to perceive color differences under normal lighting conditions. In aviation, CVD can be a safety concern for pilots who need to accurately identify colored signals, lights, and displays. The Federal aviation administration (FAA) requires all pilots to have normal color vision, as tested by the FAA-approved color vision test. Pilots who fail the test may be able to obtain a waiver if they can demonstrate the ability to safely perform all required aviation tasks. However, certain aviation careers, such as airline transport pilots, require normal color vision without the possibility of a waiver.
