Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

In the context of aviation, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) refers to the use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of an aircraft design. CAD software is used by aerospace engineers and designers to create precise 3D models of aircraft components and systems, including the airframe, engines, control systems, and more. These models can be manipulated to test various design attributes and performance characteristics, such as aerodynamics, structural integrity, fuel efficiency, and safety features. CAD is an essential tool in modern aircraft design, allowing for greater precision, faster design iterations, and the ability to simulate and analyze performance before physical prototypes are built. It also facilitates the integration of designs into manufacturing processes, such as Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) or Additive Manufacturing, which can significantly reduce production time and costs. Furthermore, CAD models can be used in virtual reality environments for pilot training and flight simulation.
