Controller Pilot Data Link Communication
Controller Pilot Data link Communication (CPDLC) is a method of communication between an aircraft and air traffic control where the two parties exchange text messages. This system is an alternative to voice communication, which has been the traditional method of communication in aviation. CPDLC is part of the modernization of air traffic control and is designed to reduce the workload of air traffic controllers and pilots, improve the clarity of communications, and increase the capacity of air traffic control to handle more flights. The system uses a data link to send messages, which can include instructions, requests, and information about the flight. The messages are displayed on a screen in the cockpit, and the pilot can respond directly through the system. CPDLC is used primarily in high altitude airspace where traditional VHF radio communication is less effective. It is also used in areas with high traffic volume to improve efficiency and safety.
