Dead Reckoning
Dead reckoning is the process of calculating one's current position by using a previously determined position, or fix, and advancing that position based upon known or estimated speeds over elapsed time and course. In aviation, dead reckoning is used as a navigation technique when other means of navigation, such as radio navigation aids or GPS, are not available or reliable. Pilots use dead reckoning by calculating their groundspeed, heading, and wind correction angle to determine their estimated position. This technique requires accurate measurement of time, distance, and heading, as well as consideration of wind speed and direction. Dead reckoning is an important skill for pilots to have in case of equipment failure or loss of communication.
