Decompression Sickness
Decompression sickness (DCS), also known as 'the bends', is a condition that occurs when a person experiences a rapid decrease in pressure, such as when ascending too quickly from a dive or when flying at high altitudes. The decrease in pressure causes nitrogen gas bubbles to form in the bloodstream and tissues, leading to symptoms such as joint pain, fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. DCS can be prevented by following proper diving and aviation procedures, such as ascending slowly and taking breaks during long flights. Treatment typically involves administering oxygen and recompression therapy in a hyperbaric chamber.
