Pressure

In aviation, pressure refers to the force exerted by the weight of the atmosphere on an object. It is measured in units of force per unit area, such as pounds per square inch (psi) or pascals (Pa). In flight, changes in pressure can affect the performance and safety of an aircraft. For example, low pressure at high altitudes can cause a decrease in engine power and a decrease in the amount of oxygen available for breathing. On the other hand, high pressure systems can cause turbulence and other weather hazards. Pilots and air traffic controllers use pressure readings to determine altitude and to make decisions about flight paths and weather avoidance.
