Ground Track
In aviation, a Ground Track refers to the path on the surface of the Earth directly below an aircraft, or the path drawn on a map to represent the course of an aircraft. It is the projection of the aircraft's path over the Earth's surface. The ground track is significant in flight planning and navigation. It is influenced by the aircraft's heading and the wind conditions at the aircraft's altitude. For instance, if an aircraft is flying due north but there is a strong wind from the west, the aircraft's ground track will be to the northeast. The ground track is different from the flight path, which is the path that an aircraft describes in space, and is not necessarily the same as the path over the ground. The ground track is also used in air traffic control to monitor the position of aircraft in flight and to manage traffic flow.
