Horsepower

Horsepower is a unit of power that is used to measure the power output of engines. In aviation, horsepower is commonly used to measure the power output of piston engines. One horsepower is equal to 550 foot-pounds per second, or 745.7 watts. The power output of an aircraft engine is an important factor in determining the aircraft's performance, including its speed, rate of climb, and maximum altitude. The horsepower of an aircraft engine can be increased by increasing the engine's size, improving its efficiency, or adding a turbocharger or supercharger.
