Icing Conditions
Icing conditions refer to atmospheric conditions that can cause ice to form on an aircraft, which can affect its performance and safety. These conditions occur when the temperature and moisture content of the air are such that ice can form on exposed surfaces of the aircraft, such as the wings, tail, and engine inlets. Icing can reduce lift, increase drag, and alter the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft, which can lead to loss of control or even a crash. Pilots must be aware of icing conditions and take appropriate measures to avoid or mitigate the effects of icing, such as using de-icing equipment, changing altitude, or altering the flight path.
