Magnetic Deviation

Magnetic deviation is the angle between magnetic north and true north caused by the magnetic fields of the earth and the aircraft. It is the difference between the direction indicated by a magnetic compass and the true direction. Magnetic deviation can be caused by the presence of ferrous metals and electrical systems in the aircraft. Pilots must take magnetic deviation into account when navigating using a magnetic compass. They can do this by applying a correction factor to the compass reading to determine the true heading. Failure to account for magnetic deviation can result in navigational errors and potentially dangerous situations.
