N Number
In the United States, an N Number is a unique identifier assigned to each aircraft for identification purposes. The N Number is displayed on the aircraft in a prominent location and is used by air traffic control, aviation authorities, and other pilots to identify the aircraft. The N Number is also used to track the aircraft's maintenance history and ownership. The format of the N Number consists of a prefix of one to five alpha characters followed by a hyphen and a suffix of one to four alpha-numeric characters. The prefix is assigned based on the aircraft's intended use or owner/operator, while the suffix is assigned sequentially.
