North Atlantic Tracks (NATs)
North Atlantic Tracks (NATs) are transatlantic flight routes that stretch from the northeast of North America to western Europe, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They are often used by aircraft traveling between North America and Europe, optimizing the journey by taking advantage of the prevailing westerly winds. The NATs are not fixed paths; they are redefined twice daily by the North Atlantic Systems Planning Group, based on the forecasted wind patterns to ensure maximum fuel efficiency and safety for the aircraft. The tracks are numbered from west to east, starting from NAT A. The tracks are also divided into Organized Track System (OTS) during peak traffic periods, and Random Routing Area (RRA) during off-peak periods. The use of NATs is coordinated by air traffic control in both North America and Europe to ensure safe separation between flights.
