Personal Flotation Devices

Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are essential safety equipment for aviation activities that take place over water. PFDs are designed to keep a person afloat and in a position where they can breathe, even if they are unconscious. PFDs come in different types, including life jackets and buoyancy aids. Life jackets are designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water, while buoyancy aids are designed to provide buoyancy and keep the wearer in a vertical or slightly backward position. PFDs must be worn by all occupants of an aircraft during flights over water, and they must be approved by the appropriate aviation authority.
