Respiratory Protective Devices
Respiratory Protective Devices (RPDs) are equipment designed to protect the wearer from inhaling harmful substances, including gases, vapors, fumes, and airborne microorganisms. In aviation, RPDs are used by pilots, cabin crew, and ground personnel who may be exposed to hazardous substances during their work. RPDs can be classified into two main categories: air-purifying respirators (APRs) and supplied-air respirators (SARs). APRs filter the air inhaled by the wearer, while SARs provide clean air from a separate source. RPDs must be selected based on the type and concentration of the hazardous substance, as well as the duration and frequency of exposure. Proper training and fit-testing are essential for the effective use of RPDs.
