VHF Bands
In the context of aviation, VHF (Very High Frequency) Bands refer to the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. These bands are extensively used in aviation for two-way radio communication, navigation, and other flight-related applications. The VHF spectrum is divided into different bands, each with a specific purpose. For instance, the band from 108 MHz to 117.95 MHz is reserved for navigation aids like VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) and ILS (Instrument Landing System). The band from 118 MHz to 136 MHz is used for air-to-ground communication. VHF radio signals are typically line-of-sight, meaning they travel in straight lines and are limited by the horizon. This makes them ideal for air traffic control communication, as they provide clear, reliable communication over relatively short distances. However, they are not suitable for long-range communication, such as transoceanic flights, which require HF (High Frequency) or satellite communication.
