VHF Radios

VHF (Very High Frequency) Radios in aviation are a type of communication device used for air-to-ground and air-to-air communication. They operate in the frequency range of 118.0 to 136.975 MHz, which is reserved exclusively for aeronautical use. VHF radios are characterized by their line-of-sight transmission capability, meaning the signal travels in a straight line and the receiving station needs to be within the 'visual' range of the transmitting station. This makes them ideal for short-range communication, typically within 200 nautical miles. VHF radios are essential in maintaining communication between aircraft and air traffic control (ATC), as well as between aircraft in flight. They are used for transmitting voice communications, but can also transmit data such as weather information and flight plans. VHF radios are a critical component of an aircraft's avionics system, contributing to safe and efficient flight operations.
