Acute Mountain Sickness
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that affects people who ascend to high altitudes too quickly, without allowing their bodies to acclimatize to the reduced air pressure and lower oxygen levels. Symptoms of AMS include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, AMS can lead to life-threatening conditions such as High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). AMS can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. The best way to prevent AMS is to ascend gradually, allowing the body to acclimatize, and to stay hydrated. In case of severe symptoms, immediate descent to lower altitudes is necessary.
