High Altitude Pulmonary Edema

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a person ascends to high altitudes too quickly, and the body is unable to acclimatize to the reduced oxygen levels. HAPE is a type of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, which means that fluid accumulates in the lungs due to factors other than heart failure. Symptoms of HAPE include shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, and fatigue. If left untreated, HAPE can lead to respiratory failure and death. Treatment for HAPE includes immediate descent to a lower altitude, administration of supplemental oxygen, and medications such as nifedipine and dexamethasone.
