Area Navigation (RNAV)
Area Navigation, commonly referred to as RNAV, is a method of navigation that allows aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of station-referenced navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these. RNAV is a fundamental aspect of modern aviation navigation, enabling aircraft to navigate directly between two points on the ground, rather than by referencing ground-based navigation aids. This method of navigation is particularly beneficial in areas where ground-based navigation aids are sparse or non-existent. RNAV systems are typically integrated into the aircraft's flight management system (FMS), and can use a variety of information sources to determine the aircraft's position, including satellite navigation systems like GPS, inertial navigation systems, and distance measuring equipment. RNAV has significantly improved the efficiency of air travel by allowing for more direct routes and flexible flight paths.
