Automated Weather Observing Systems
Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) are a suite of sensors which collect data to provide information about weather conditions for aviation purposes. These systems are designed to automatically provide updates about the weather every minute and transmit the data to pilots in real-time. The AWOS measures and reports a variety of meteorological parameters including temperature, dew point, wind speed and direction, visibility, cloud height and type, barometric pressure, and precipitation. The data collected by AWOS is crucial for flight planning and decision-making processes in aviation. It helps pilots to understand the current weather conditions at the airport and along the flight path, enabling them to make informed decisions about flight routes and altitudes. AWOS are typically installed at airports, and the data they provide is used by air traffic controllers, meteorologists, and pilots to ensure safe and efficient flight operations. The AWOS plays a critical role in aviation safety by providing accurate and timely weather information.
