Compressor

A compressor is a device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. In aviation, compressors are used in gas turbine engines to compress the incoming air before it enters the combustion chamber. This compressed air is mixed with fuel and ignited, creating a high-velocity exhaust gas that drives the turbine and produces thrust. Compressors can be classified into two types: axial and centrifugal. Axial compressors are used in high-performance engines and have multiple stages of rotating and stationary blades that compress the air in a continuous flow. Centrifugal compressors are used in smaller engines and have a single stage of rotating blades that accelerate the air outward to the diffuser, where it is compressed.
