Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)

In the context of aviation, Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) refers to the use of software and computer-controlled machinery to automate a part or the entirety of the manufacturing process for aircraft components. CAM is a subsequent step to Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and often the two are integrated into a single process known as CAD/CAM. In aviation, CAM is used to improve the efficiency, precision, and speed of manufacturing processes. It allows for the creation of complex parts with high precision that would be difficult or impossible to achieve manually. CAM can be used in a variety of manufacturing processes in aviation, including milling, turning, and drilling. It is particularly useful in the production of complex aerostructures and engine components. The use of CAM in aviation manufacturing also reduces the risk of human error, increases safety, and can lead to significant cost savings.
