Containment Ring

In the context of aviation, a containment ring, also known as a burst containment structure, is a critical component of a jet engine. It is designed to prevent the escape of high-speed debris in the event of a catastrophic engine failure, such as a blade-out event where a turbine blade breaks off. The containment ring is typically made of high-strength materials, such as Kevlar or steel, and is located around the circumference of the engine. Its primary function is to absorb the energy of the debris and redirect it within the engine casing, thereby preventing it from causing damage to the aircraft structure or injuring passengers. The design and testing of containment rings are subject to stringent regulations by aviation authorities to ensure the safety of aircraft during flight. The effectiveness of a containment ring is evaluated through a blade-out test, where a blade is deliberately detached from the engine during operation to assess the ability of the containment ring to prevent the escape of debris.
