Control Zone

A Control zone (CTR) is a designated airspace surrounding an airport within which air traffic control service is provided. The primary function of a CTR is to prevent collisions between aircraft operating in the vicinity of an airport and to provide a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of traffic. The lateral and vertical limits of a CTR are defined by the appropriate authority and may vary depending on the size and complexity of the airport. Pilots are required to obtain clearance from air traffic control before entering a CTR and to comply with the instructions given by the controller.
