Controlled Flight Into Terrain
Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) is an aviation accident in which an airworthy aircraft, under pilot control, is unintentionally flown into the ground, a mountain, water, or any other obstacle. CFIT accidents often occur in conditions of reduced visibility, such as fog, low clouds, or darkness. The pilot may lose situational awareness, misjudge altitude, or misinterpret instrument readings, leading to the aircraft's collision with the terrain. CFIT accidents are a major cause of fatalities in aviation, and various measures have been taken to prevent them, including terrain awareness and warning systems, improved pilot training, and better air traffic control procedures.
