Deviation

In aviation, deviation refers to the difference between the magnetic heading of an aircraft and the compass heading. This discrepancy is caused by the magnetic fields generated by electrical equipment and metal structures within the aircraft, which can distort the compass reading. Deviation varies from aircraft to aircraft, and even from heading to heading on the same aircraft. To correct for deviation, pilots use a deviation card that is specific to their aircraft and its equipment. This card provides the deviation correction for each heading. It is important to note that deviation is different from variation, which is the difference between true north and magnetic north. While variation is caused by the Earth's magnetic field, deviation is caused by the aircraft itself. Accurate calculation and correction of deviation is crucial for precise navigation and safe flight operations.
