Magnetic Heading
Magnetic Heading is the direction in which the aircraft's nose is pointed as measured by a magnetic compass. It is the angle between magnetic north and the aircraft's longitudinal axis. Magnetic Heading is affected by the magnetic field of the earth and may differ from True Heading, which is the direction of the aircraft relative to true north. To obtain True Heading, Magnetic Variation (the difference between magnetic north and true north) must be taken into account. Pilots use Magnetic Heading to navigate and maintain a desired course. It is also used in air traffic control for separation purposes.
