Geostationary Orbit
In the context of aviation and aerospace, a geostationary orbit, also referred to as a geosynchronous equatorial orbit, is a circular orbit 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles) above the Earth's equator, following the direction of the Earth's rotation. An object in such an orbit appears motionless, at a fixed position in the sky, to ground observers. This unique characteristic makes it an ideal position for weather monitoring, satellite communication, and television broadcasting. The geostationary orbit is directly above the equator, contrasting with the geosynchronous orbit, which can be at any inclination and still maintains a constant ground track. The concept of geostationary orbits was popularized by science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke in the 20th century and they are now commonly used in modern telecommunication systems.
