Gyroscopic Precession

Gyroscopic precession is a phenomenon that occurs in rotating bodies, such as the rotor of a helicopter or the wheels of an airplane. It is the result of a force being applied to a spinning object, causing the resulting motion to be felt 90 degrees later in the direction of rotation. In aviation, gyroscopic precession is important because it affects the behavior of aircraft control surfaces, such as the ailerons and elevators. Pilots must be aware of gyroscopic precession and compensate for it when making control inputs to ensure the aircraft responds as intended.
