Halon
Halon is a liquefied, compressed gas that is used to extinguish fires in aircraft. It is a highly effective fire suppressant that works by interrupting the chemical chain reaction of the fire. Halon is particularly useful in aviation because it is electrically non-conductive, leaves no residue, and is safe for use on sensitive electronic equipment. However, Halon has been found to be harmful to the environment and is no longer used in new aircraft. Instead, alternative fire suppression systems such as water mist, foam, and non-halogenated agents are used.
