IATA Airport Code
The IATA Airport Code is a three-letter code designating many airports around the world, defined by the International Air transport Association (IATA). The characters prominently displayed on baggage tags attached at airport check-in desks are an example of a way these codes are used. The assignment of these codes is governed by IATA Resolution 763, and it is administered by the IATA's headquarters in Montreal. The codes are used in airline reservation systems, timetables, tickets, and other areas where a unique identifier for an airport is needed. They are more commonly known to the public than the ICAO codes, which are used mainly for air traffic control and flight planning. The IATA codes are not unique: for example, several airports can have the same code if they are in different states or countries. The codes are also not always indicative of an airport's name or location.
