Lightning

Lightning is a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground, an aircraft, or another cloud. Lightning strikes on aircraft can cause damage to the structure, electrical systems, and fuel tanks. To minimize the risk of lightning strikes, aircraft are equipped with lightning protection systems that provide a low-resistance path for the lightning current to flow around the aircraft, rather than through it. These systems include metallic skins, conductive bonding, and static wicks. Pilots are trained to avoid thunderstorms and to follow specific procedures in the event of a lightning strike.
