Space Shuttle Program

The Space Shuttle Program, also known as the Space Transportation System (STS), was a United States government-funded program run by NASA, aimed at performing routine access to space. The program started in the late 1960s and the first flight took place in 1981. The space shuttle became the major focus of NASA in the late 1970s and the 1980s. The system was designed to be reusable, with the orbiter (the actual 'space shuttle') being capable of multiple flights into orbit. The program was responsible for many significant achievements in space flight, including the launch and repair of satellites, the construction of the International Space Station (ISS), and the use of a variety of scientific and technological experiments in space. The program was officially retired in 2011 after 135 missions. The Space Shuttle Program was a significant milestone in aviation and space exploration history, marking the first time a spacecraft was designed for reuse.
