Supplemental Oxygen

Supplemental oxygen refers to the administration of oxygen to a person who is breathing but not able to obtain sufficient oxygen to maintain normal bodily function. In aviation, supplemental oxygen is used to prevent hypoxia, a condition that occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen. Hypoxia can cause dizziness, confusion, and even loss of consciousness, which can be dangerous for pilots and passengers. Supplemental oxygen is required for pilots and passengers when flying at high altitudes, typically above 10,000 feet. The Federal aviation administration (FAA) mandates the use of supplemental oxygen for pilots and passengers during flights at or above 12,500 feet for more than 30 minutes, and at all times above 14,000 feet.
