Terrain Awareness And Warning Systems

Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems (TAWS) are safety systems installed in aircraft to alert pilots of potential terrain conflicts. TAWS use GPS and other sensors to determine the aircraft's position and compare it to a database of terrain and obstacle information. If the system detects that the aircraft is on a collision course with terrain or obstacles, it will issue visual and audible warnings to the pilot. There are two types of TAWS: Class A and Class B. Class A TAWS provides the highest level of protection and is required for certain types of aircraft and operations. Class B TAWS provides a lower level of protection and is optional.
