Thermals

Thermals are rising columns of warm air that are formed when the sun heats the ground. These columns of warm air can be used by glider pilots to gain altitude without the use of an engine. Glider pilots can circle within a thermal to gain altitude and then use that altitude to fly to their destination. Thermals are also used by birds for soaring. The ability to find and use thermals is an important skill for glider pilots and birds alike.
