Traffic Alert And Collision Avoidance System
Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is an aircraft collision avoidance system designed to reduce the incidence of mid-air collisions between aircraft. TCAS uses radar to detect the presence of other aircraft in the vicinity and provides instructions to the pilot to avoid a potential collision. The system operates independently of ground-based air traffic control and provides a last line of defense against mid-air collisions. TCAS is mandatory on all commercial aircraft with a seating capacity of more than 19 passengers or a maximum takeoff weight greater than 15,000 pounds.
