Turbulence
Turbulence is the irregular and unpredictable movement of air, causing a disturbance to the flow of air. In aviation, turbulence is a common phenomenon that can be caused by a variety of factors such as atmospheric pressure, jet streams, thunderstorms, and wind shear. Turbulence can be classified into three categories: light, moderate, and severe. Light turbulence causes slight, erratic changes in altitude and attitude, while moderate turbulence causes rapid changes in altitude and attitude. Severe turbulence causes large, abrupt changes in altitude and attitude, and can cause structural damage to the aircraft. Pilots use weather reports and forecasts to avoid areas of turbulence, and passengers are advised to keep their seatbelts fastened at all times while in flight.
