Waypoint

In aviation, a waypoint is a specified geographical location used to define an area navigation route or the flight path of an aircraft. Waypoints are identified by either a name or a code consisting of five letters. They are used in both en route navigation, as well as in terminal procedures, such as instrument approaches and departures. Waypoints are typically defined by latitude and longitude coordinates, but can also be defined by radio navigation aids or by intersections of airways. Pilots use waypoints to navigate through the airspace system, and air traffic controllers use them to direct the movement of aircraft.
